Lines on object surfaces as a visual representation of data values

Information for participants

Dear participant,

Thank you for your interest in our scientific study. Please read the following information carefully and then decide about your participation or non-participation in this study. Your participation in this study is voluntary and you can withdraw your participation at any time without giving any reason and without incurring any disadvantages. The study management may also decide to discontinue the entire study or terminate your participation prematurely. You are only allowed to participate if you are at least 18 years old. Please do not use a mobile phone to participate in this study and maximize the size of the window containing this study. Please do also not participate if you have a color-vision deficiency since there are colors used in the tasks of this study.

  1. Who conducts the study?

The study is conducted by the Visualization and Explorative Data Analysis group at the University of Jena.
  2. What is the purpose of this study?

The purpose of this study is to investigate the suitability of several line generation methods for encoding values on the surface of an object.
  3. Description of the study

The estimated time required to complete the tasks is 15 to 20 minutes. In each task, a line drawing of a mesh object will be presented to you. You will then have to compare two highlighted positions on the surface and indicate at which position the value is higher. The study is split up into three sections. Two sections will have values visualized through lines on the surface. One section will have values visualized through surface color. Additionally, you will be asked to provide some demographic information (such as age and gender).
  4. Are there any risks?

There are no known or anticipated risks from participation in this study.
  5. Insurance

    There is no insurance coverage.
  6. Costs and remuneration.

There will be no remuneration. No costs will be incurred as a result of participation in the study.
  7. How will your data be used?

The data collected during this study will be used for research and might be published and reused by third parties. However, no personally identifiable information is collected during the study so you will remain anonymous. Therefore, it is not possible to delete your data after the end of your participation in the study.
